10 tips to good parenting

1. Remember what is happening today will be over with tomorrow. If your kids messed up your clean living room, know that it won t stay that way, it will be clean again tomorrow. Having this viewpoint will help you to move on.

2. Allow a child to start showing independence at an early age. When they are old enough to put away their own toys and clear their own plates from the table then let them. They will never learn the importance of doing things on their own if you do everything for them.

3. Do not put your kids to bed late and just hope that they will sleep later the following morning. That does now always work and you will usually end up with a child that wakes up at the normal time, but they will be very cranky for the day.

4. Teaching your child to read is very important; however, it is also just as important to teach your child to enjoy reading. The latter can sometimes be tricky to do but there are ways to encourage your child to read. One of the best ways to do this is to let your child choose what they want to read. Take the time to bring your child to the library every week so that they can figure out on their own which kinds of books they enjoy reading. It can also help improve their reading ability as the child will naturally start to become eager to read more difficult materials and grow out of the children s section.

5. Childproofing your home is more important than you may think. The number one cause in death of children is accidents, many of which could have been prevented if the parent had childproofed their home. Even if you think your child is old enough to know better, keep these safety measures in your home.

6. It is important with children to have patience. Sometimes it will take more than once to get an idea or a rule through to them but be patient and persistent. If you lose your cool so will they! Through patience and persistence you can teach them right from wrong, and how to remain level headed.

7. Teach your children the value of good financial habits by letting them earn a modest allowance, save it, spend it, and make a few mistakes with it. If your child purchases a cheap toy that immediately breaks, it s a good lesson in value. Likewise, when your child suddenly has enough saved for a special trip out, you are reinforcing the value of saving wisely.

8. If you want your child to have a healthy emotional intelligence, make sure to validate their emotions and discuss emotional expression with them. Children learn when it is appropriate and inappropriate to express emotion – show them that emotions are a natural and valid means of expressing our feelings by labeling emotions for them, discussing both their and your emotional expressions, and validating their feelings.

9. In order to be a good parent, you must not watch every single thing that your child does. This will smother them and only push them further away. If you give them some freedom, they will in turn put more truth into how they are feeling and how they are living their life. This way, the children are less likely to rebel.

10. Hold your breast with your fingers underneath and holding your thumb on the top when breastfeeding. Use the hand you use the most to support the head and the other hand for holding your breast. Place the nipple near his nose and he will open wide to take it in. This will provide the best latch for success.
